Indonesia Young Leaders Programme

Story of the Land

“Our stories and rituals were not just about the past—they are reminders of how we must protect the Earth today.”

The goal of the project is to develop a resource based on traditional wisdom related to people and environment which can inform environmental actions including improving physical environment in Nagekeo regency by reducing litter.

Main Objectives:

Sustainable Tourism Approach Reduce Marine Debris in Bahowo Mangrove Park and Make Bahowo Better

Mapia Project Bahowo was designed to tackle environmental challenges and promote sustainable tourism in Bahowo, North Sulawesi. Through extensive data collection and focus group discussions with the local community, government, youth, and religious leaders, it became clear that the coastal village faced serious waste management issues that threatened its natural beauty and marine ecosystems. Addressing these challenges was essential to preserving Bahowo’s environment and enhancing its appeal as a tourist destination.

AKSI BIRU PLASTIK - Blue Plastic Action (Maria, 2023)

Maria’s project, AKSI BIRU PLASTIK, focuses on strengthening youth leadership in marine plastic pollution awareness on Tahima Soroma Island. It was built on the belief that youth are critical change agents in environmental protection, especially in remote island communities where waste management infrastructure is limited. The project’s two main goals are to build the capacity of young people and to increase community awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and how to reduce waste.

Family and Community Support Network to Improve TB Treatment Adherence (Fajar, 2023)

Fajar’s project addressed the complex barriers to tuberculosis (TB) treatment adherence in Makassar by establishing a holistic family and community support network. The project targeted three key challenges: mental health, financial hardship, and stigma—factors that often hinder TB patients from completing their treatment. By engaging TB patients, families, survivors, healthcare workers, and mental health professionals, the initiative created an inclusive support system that combined treatment education, psychosocial assistance, and economic empowerment.
