Indonesia Young Leaders Programme

Goal

Enhance the learning experience at Early Childhood Education (ECE) centres in South Amfoang Sub-district through capacity building activities for ECE teachers on lesson planning and creating an environment conducive to learning.

Main objectives

  1. Build the skills, knowledge, and confidence of ECE teachers through training sessions on understanding early childhood development, how to create a lesson plan in accordance with children's needs, and how to assess children’s development.
  2. Create a child-centered play environment in ECE in which children do a range of creative activities which stimulate their development.
  3. Produce a handbook in collaboration with ECE teachers which contains the games and activities shared during the project, including traditional games from the local culture.

Context & theory of change

Educational qualifications and requirements for ECE teachers were established by the Indonesian Government in the 2021 National Education Standards. However, many ECE teachers in Kupang District do not meet this standard in terms of educational level, and opportunities for professional development are not widely available. Thus, teaching practice in some ECE centres remains mostly teacher-led and results-oriented.

Through the provision of training directly within ECE centres on child development, lesson planning and creating and play environments based on children's needs, teachers will be supported to use a child-centered approach, leading to better educational outcomes. By participating in the training, teachers will develop pedagogic competencies required by the national standards and earn formal credits that will count towards their accreditation under these standards.

Project activities & budget

Tri and her project team will conduct a series of training workshops aimed at improving the pedagogical competence of teachers in South Amfoang Sub-district. Through the training, the teachers will learn a range of learner-centred teaching methods and techniques for designing lessons based on the needs of the children in their centre. Participants will also have individual coaching sessions to support their learning. Following the training workshops, participants will have a two-week practicum where they will try out the techniques they have learned with their own students and participate in evaluation. Finally, teachers will collaborate with project staff to create a handbook of games and activities used during the training workshops and practicum, with an emphasis on local knowledge and wisdom.
